This book Sivaji by the versatile historian in twenty five chapters is more than mere biography. It examines Shivaji’s own acts and policy with detailed knowledge of the internal affairs of the Mughal empire, Bijapur and Golkonda. This fifth edition deals with Shivaji’s Ships and naval bases, Portuguese information on the Siddis and Maratha navy. The birth of the last Hindu navy has been studied with the fullness of details and criticism which the importance of this subject to New India demands, writes the eminent historian in his preface. Shivaji’s relations with the English and the Portuguese, his achievements, character and place in history besides an extremely detailed chronology and index makes the book immensely valuable.
