About Author
Ramesh Chandra Majumdar, born on December 4, 1888, in Khandarpara, Faridpur, Bengal (now in Bangladesh), was a distinguished Indian historian whose work spanned a broad range of historical themes, from ancient India to Southeast Asia. He graduated with Honors in History from Presidency College in 1909 and completed his MA at Calcutta University in 1911. Majumdar began his historical research under MM Haraprasad Shastri, earning the Premchand Roychand studentship in 1912 for his dissertation on the Andhra-Kusana Period. His scholarly journey began with the publication of his PhD thesis, Corporate Life in Ancient India, in 1919, marking the start of a prolific career that included significant contributions such as Early History of Bengal (1924) and Champa (1927).
Majumdar's academic career was marked by his exploration of Southeast Asian Studies, where his travels through Europe and Southeast Asia resulted in authoritative works like Hindu Colonies in the Far East (1944, revised in 1963). He served as Vice-Chancellor of Dacca University from 1936 to 1942, during which he initiated a comprehensive history of Bengal. His magnum opus, the eleven-volume series History and Culture of the Indian People, involved collaboration with 75 scholars and exemplified his dedication to preserving India's historical and cultural legacy. Holding prestigious positions, including at Benares Hindu University and as a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Chicago and Pennsylvania, Majumdar continued to influence historical discourse until his passing on February 11, 1980, in Kolkata, West Bengal.
