We are the talking apes, you and I. No offence intended. Quite the contrary. We’re the ones who got lucky.
Ready to solve one of the world’s biggest mysteries? How we talk. Every story here holds a clue to this gigantic puzzle that has hypnotised brilliant minds over time. Find handprints of not-quitehumans on ancient cave walls, secrets buried in ash from a 7-yearlong winter, forbidden experiments by kings on babies and even a rogue gene hiding in your DNA. How do they all piece together?
The story of communication gallops through dark arts, untranslatable words and languages pulled out from dead. Along the way, meet outstanding characters who played their part: the one-word man, 400-word monkey and million-word computer. Race towards a future of brain-to-brain interaction.
Warning: Enjoy the rollercoaster ride of language, hilarious histories and crazy quizzes but ignore my wise-cracking dog who will insist he wrote this book.
