Urban heritage of Asia and India is a very significant segment that has largely remained unaddressed for a long time. Recent recognition of Asian and Indian cities as living heritage in UN policies is a welcome change. This volume provides an overview of UN approach to Asia’s urban heritage along with a wide perspective of national and regional approaches to urban conservation in a range of Asian countries. More specifically, it evaluates the recent focus on culture and development in Indian cities through national level schemes. About Author
Shikha Jain has vast experience in cultural heritage of India that ranges from steering conservation projects for various state governments to preparing conservation plans funded by international organisations such as the Getty Foundation, World Monuments Fund and nominations for UNESCO World Heritage. She is steering the Ajmer HRIDAY Project for the Ministry of Urban Development with her organisation DRONAH as a City Anchor, also the Knowledge Partner for Smart City Plans of Bhubaneswar, Jaipur and Udaipur. As Director, DRONAH, she has led more than 40 conservation projects across India in the last 10 years. She received National level HUDCO awards for two urban conservation projects in 2013. Her work on Heritage Management Plan of Jaipur is documented as Best Practice by the National Institute of Urban Affairs in 2015. Specialising as an architect from SPA, Delhi with a Masters in Preservation and Community Design from Kansas State University, US and a doctorate in architectural history from PRASADA, De Montfort University, UK, she has several books and published papers in national and international journals to her credit. She has been the Chief Editor of Context: Built, Living and Natural since its inception in 2004. Parul G Munjal is an Associate Professor at Sushant School of Art and Architecture, Ansal University. Through her association with DRONAH as Senior Conservation Architect, she worked on a number of research based projects including preparation of World Heritage Dossiers, along with plans for conservation, management and interpretation of heritage sites in India. Parul is currently pursuing research on built heritage of small and medium towns of the Gurgaon District, Haryana, as a part of her doctoral study.
