Lama Taranatha, born in 1575, wrote his significant historical work in 1608. This book, essential for understanding both Indian history and the history of Buddhism, was first translated from Tibetan into Russian by V. Vasil’ev in April 1869. Later that same year, in October, Schiefner produced a German translation, also published in St. Petersburg.

The importance of Lama Taranatha’s work cannot be overstated. It provides a detailed account of Indian history and offers profound insights into the development and spread of Buddhism. As a result, it has become a cornerstone for scholars studying these subjects. The German translation by Schiefner has been particularly influential, serving as a primary resource for researchers across various fields.

For decades, modern scholars have relied extensively on Schiefner’s German translation to support their research. They use it to explore diverse aspects of Indian culture, historical events, and the philosophical and religious evolution of Buddhism. This work helps historians, religious scholars, and cultural anthropologists gain a comprehensive understanding of the period it covers.

In essence, Lama Taranatha’s book is more than just a historical document; it is a bridge connecting contemporary researchers to the rich heritage of ancient India and Buddhism. Its translations have ensured that the knowledge it contains is accessible to a broader audience, facilitating academic discourse and discovery. As such, it continues to be an invaluable resource, illuminating the past and informing the present study of Indian and Buddhist histories.
