Śrī Tattva-sandarbha is the opening volume of the celebrated Ṣaṭ-sandarbha series by Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī, one of the foremost theologians and philosophers of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition. Written in 16th-century Vṛndāvana, this foundational text sets the stage for the five subsequent sandarbhas by establishing the ultimate authority and subject matter of scriptural revelation.

In this work, Jīva Gosvāmī first examines the various sources of spiritual knowledge (pramāṇas) and demonstrates why the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam stands supreme among all Vedic scriptures. He then identifies its central theme: the Supreme Reality, Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is the ultimate source of all energies and the object of pure devotional service (bhakti).

The Tattva-sandarbha serves three essential purposes:

  • Defining the epistemology – which scriptures and processes give us perfect knowledge of the Absolute Truth.

  • Establishing the Bhāgavatam – as the spotless Purāṇa (amala-purāṇa) and the conclusive Vedic authority.

  • Introducing the subject matter – laying the philosophical foundation for deeper studies in the following sandarbhas.

Accessible to both scholars and practitioners, Śrī Tattva-sandarbha is a gateway to the profound theology of the Gauḍīya tradition, offering a clear, logical, and scripturally rooted vision of reality that culminates in loving devotion to Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

About Author

Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī (c. 1513–1608 CE) is revered as one of the Six Gosvāmīs of Vṛndāvana, the principal disciples of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu entrusted with systematizing and preserving His teachings. Born in the village of Ramakeli in present-day West Bengal, Jīva Gosvāmī was the nephew of Śrī Rūpa and Śrī Sanātana Gosvāmīs. From a young age, he exhibited exceptional scholarship, devotion, and renunciation. After studying Sanskrit grammar, poetry, logic, and philosophy in Navadvīpa and Vārāṇasī, he joined his uncles in Vṛndāvana. There, he became the foremost philosopher and theologian of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition, composing an extensive body of works that includes the monumental Ṣaṭ-sandarbhas—a six-part philosophical treatise that defines the theology, epistemology, and devotional practices of the tradition. Known for his extraordinary command of the Vedic scriptures, Jīva Gosvāmī harmonized various philosophical schools, establishing the supremacy of Śrī Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Personality of Godhead and pure bhakti as the highest spiritual goal. He also safeguarded sacred sites in Vṛndāvana, installed Deities such as Rādhā-Dāmodara, and trained generations of disciples. Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī’s life was a perfect synthesis of profound scholarship and deep devotional service, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire spiritual seekers around the world.
