Astronomy is the basis of Astrology, and as the Śāstras state, Siddhānta is the mathematical component of Jyotiṣa. One must study the Siddhānta to understand how the ancient Maharṣis and Ācāryas computed the Graha positions. Learning the evolution and history of a subject is as much important as the current state of the subject.

The knowledge of computation of planetary positions in the sky is only a starting point in the entire field of astronomy. After covering the method of determining the Longitude and Latitude of a Graha, Sūryasiddhānta moves on to apply that in ascertaining astronomical events such as Yuti (conjunction), Astāṅgata (combustion), Grahayuddha (planetary fights), Vakragati (retrogression), Grahaṇa (eclipse) and several others. This book explores the astronomical and astrological aspects of such events.

Also covered are an introduction to Aṅkaśāstra, or Vedic Numerology, which is based on the Year, Month, Day and Horā lord. Siddhānta texts lay down the principles of determining them but are hardly used today. I hope this book will serve as a guide to the mathematical-minded Jyotiṣīs to Astronomical aspects of Jyotiṣa.

About Author

Sarajit Poddar, also known as Varāhamihira, is a passionate enthusiast of Jyotish (Vedic astrology). He began his journey under the tutelage of his paternal uncle, Sri Manoj Kānti Poddar, and received further guidance from Pt. Sanjay Rath. A dedicated seeker, Sarajit has spent over thirty years striving to understand the alignment of celestial forces and their influence on worldly affairs. His studies have focused on uncovering the hidden meanings behind the shlokas and sutras of classical texts, as well as reconciling their differences. Through this meticulous exploration, he has developed a profound understanding of Jyotish principles. Sarajit's quest for deeper insights into Jyotish culminated in the creation of his book, "In Search of Jyotish." In this work, he shares his observations, reflections, and experiences, offering valuable knowledge to fellow seekers. The book is a testament to his commitment to unveiling the secrets of Jyotish and his desire to connect with others who share his passion. By sharing his journey and findings, Sarajit aims to contribute to the collective understanding of Jyotish and inspire others on their path to uncovering the mysteries of the celestial and earthly realms.
