Joseph Andrews

Henry Fielding’s first novel Joseph Andrews was conceived partly as a satire on Richardson’s Pamela. However, the ‘comic epic in prose’, as he called the work, assumes an identity of its own as it relates in picaresque style the adventures of Joseph Andrews and his companion, Parson Adams. In the process, hypocrisy of the eighteenth century social life in England is held up to ridicule.
