mother Amelia a resigned young woman straight out of the Victorian England,confronted
through a strange India,with her own sexuality.January 1930 Amelia set sail
with Emy on the first ship to Mumbaito reunite with her husband Thomas,
Captain in the army of Khalapur, in Rajasthan .But the reunion leaves much to
be desired .Thomas seems to have changes unless it is Amelia who cannot
handle the suffocating heat of the Thar dessert. Fortunately there is Kenneth
Lowther, Thomas’s friendand athesit philospher, who tries to explain to
Amelia, the disconcerting India, its religion, coustumes and the
magnifiecience of it maharaja’s. The young lady finds it difficult to find
her bearings in the new set-up.
