This beautifully illustrated chronicle presents an in-depth, firsthand narrative of the Dalai Lama’s life story and the broader Tibetan saga. Drawing from intimate remembrances of those closest to him and featuring a treasure trove of over 400 images capturing Tibet’s priceless visual heritage, this work preserves the story of what it was like to create a nation from nothing — in exile.
It reflects on how His Holiness rallied tirelessly for his people, blending biography, history, and legacy into one rich and moving account. It provides a detailed view of the tumultuous events he navigated — events that ultimately led to his rise as a global moral and spiritual figure.
The book also highlights the Dalai Lama’s efforts to alleviate suffering, tackle global challenges, and promote human flourishing through compassion-based universal ethics, all while working closely with science and modern thinking.
The story is deeply personal: Tendzin Choegyal, who was just thirteen when he accompanied his elder brother (then 23-year-old Dalai Lama) on the perilous 1959 escape to India, decades later encouraged his lifelong friend Tenzin Geyche Tethong — the Dalai Lama’s personal aide for 40 years — to document this incredible journey.
Together, with photo archivist Jane Moore and a passionate creative team, they have created a memorable, comprehensive, and intimate portrait. In these uncertain times, the book offers an uplifting retrospective on a visionary leader, a resilient heritage, a timeless cause, and the creative spirit that continues to inspire hearts around the world.

About Author
Born in 1943 in Lhasa, Tethong joined the Tibetan administrative service in 1961 and, just three years later, was appointed to the Private Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He continued to serve there until his retirement in 2007, eventually holding the position of Secretary (English Section).
Over the years, Tethong worked closely as the Dalai Lama’s personal assistant, accompanying him on numerous historic international visits — including his meeting with Pope Paul VI at the Vatican in 1973, the Dalai Lama’s first visit to the United States in 1979, and the momentous Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo in 1989.
Beyond his role in the Private Office, he also served as Deputy Director of the Department of Information and International Relations, and was instrumental in establishing Tibet’s first Department of Health in the 1980s.
This is the first time Tenzin Geyche Tethong has written about his extraordinary journey — offering a rare, intimate account of his years as one of His Holiness’s closest aides, and his front-row seat to history.
