Arms and The Man

Arms and the Man makes an obvious attempt to disillusion the popular mind about its traditional romantic ideas of war and love. So, it is called an anti-romantic comedy–an attempt to ridicule certain views regarding life. And yet the play has been a continued success because of its very romantic qualities–its romantic characters, romantic ending and romantic atmosphere of gaiety and laughter. There is a great deal of truth in Sampson’s comment that the play, though professing to be anti-romantic, is gaily romantic.
