The first Gazetteer of the Delhi District was published in 1883-84 when District Gazetteers were still in their infancy. It was mostly based on Mr. Maconachie?s Settlement Report of the District. The Imperial announcement of 12th December, 1911, creating Delhi the capital of India caused ultimately the dismemberment of the Delhi District on 1st October, 1912. Accordingly this Gazetteer was prepared to show the state of old Delhi District of Punjab Province as it existed at the time when the new Province of Delhi was constituted. This revised Gazetteer of Delhi incorporates the 1911 census figures. The present Gazetteer is a well preserved record of eco-social, cultural, historical and anthropological data of Delhi at the beginning of the twentieth century. It provides a fascinating glimpse into mosaic of life as lived in Delhi at that time. The work which has long been out-of-print is being re-issued for the use of historians, planners, conservators, scholars as well as general readers. A must read for all Delhi dwellers, lovers and visitors.
