“A gripping eyewitness account of a major 20th-century military conflict by the UK’s most popular writer on geopolitics.
The shattering of Yugoslavia in the 1990s proved that, even after nearly 50 years of peace, war could still return to Europe. This devastating period reached its bloody climax in Kosovo in 1999. Tim Marshall, who was then the diplomatic editor at Sky News, was on the ground reporting the Kosovo War. In this illuminating account, he shares how events unfolded through a thrilling journalistic memoir that draws on his personal experiences, eyewitness reports, and interviews with intelligence officials from five different countries.
Twenty years after the war’s end, Marshall’s story remains profoundly relevant. With the resurgence of Russian power, a weakened NATO, and the halt in EU expansion, questions about the possibility of conflict on European soil linger. This book is utterly gripping, showcasing Tim Marshall at his best: behind the lines, under fire, and providing the keen insights that have established him as one of Britain’s leading writers on geopolitics.”
