Buddha?s teachings centre around two basic principles. One is the Four Noble Truths, in which the Buddha diagnoses the problem of suffering and indicates the treatment necessary to remedy this problem. The other is the Noble Eightfold Path, the practical discipline he prescribes to uproot and eliminate the deep underlying causes of suffering.

This book offers, in simple and clear language, a concise yet thorough explanation of the Eightfold Path. Basing himself solidly upon the Buddha own words, the author examines each factor of the path to determine exactly what it implies in the way of practical training. Finally, in the concluding chapter, he shows how all eight factors of the path function in unison to bring about the realisation of the Buddhist goal: enlightenment and liberation.

The author, American-born monk Bhikkhu Bodhi, was President of the Buddhist Publication Society. He is the co-translator of The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha (Majjhima Nik?ya) and translator of The Connected Discourses of the Buddha (Samyutta Nik?ya). His most recent work is The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha (Anguttara Nik?ya).
Bhikkhu Bodhi presents the essential teaching of the Buddha with great care and clarity. The Noble Eightfold Path is sure to be a guide and a source of inspiration for which many will be grateful. ?Sharon Salzberg, author, Loving Kindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness; A Heart as Wide as the World

Bhikkhu Bodhi great gift to us all is his clear and authentic transmission of the Buddha teaching. The Noble Eightfold Path expresses the essence of the spiritual path and lives up to the author wonderfully high standards. This book is a wonderful contribution to the Dhamma in the West. ?Joseph Goldstein, author, Insight Meditation: The Practice of Freedom
